About Appulse Index
An observatory for the App Store: which iOS apps are moving, where, and how fast.
What it is
Appulse Index follows the App Store top 100 charts in every tracked country and category, and turns them into movement: which apps climbed, which fell, which just entered a chart, which took a #1 spot, and which new releases are already charting.
The name comes from appulse, the astronomy term for two objects appearing to come close together in the sky. Here it's the moment an app moves close to the top.
Who it's for
- Developers checking how their app and their competitors move in each country.
- Marketers watching what a launch, a feature or a campaign does to a ranking.
- People looking for app ideas who want to see which kinds of apps are breaking out right now.
How it works
- Apple's public top 100 charts are checked about every 6 hours, for every tracked country and category.
- Each app's rank is compared with its earlier rank in the same chart and country. Ranks are never combined across countries.
- Each charting app gets a momentum score from 0 to 100 from how far and how fast it climbs, and in how many countries (see Rising apps).
- Entries, big moves, new #1s and new versions are recorded as events on each app's page.
The FAQ explains each number in detail.
What it won't do
- Show download or revenue numbers. Apple doesn't publish them; anything estimated is labeled as an estimate.
- Fill gaps with made-up data. Every “Updated” time is a real check of Apple's charts.
- Guess why an app moved. Events say what happened, not why.
