Cryptogramm 1.2 – what’s new LOCKED DEAD DROP WITH NTAG 424 DNA Besides ordinary NFC stickers (NTAG213/215/216), you can now choose the NTAG 424 DNA as a dead drop. It hands out the message only after an AES authentication. A stranger’s phone sees nothing there – not even the ciphertext. • One button for everything: a factory-new tag is set up for your key the first time you tap “Write to NFC tag”, in the same tap. If the tag belongs to a different key, the app stops without changing anything. • Reset: with your key, the tag is wiped completely and becomes an ordinary sticker again. Without the key this is impossible. If the key is lost, the tag stays locked forever. • The input field shows how many characters fit on the tag: about 250 for an ordinary message. READABLE ONCE ONLY On the NTAG 424 DNA a message can be left so that it opens exactly once – and never again, not even for you. The chip counts the pickup, and the message is bound to that one time. The chip enforces this, not the app. • Room for about 108 characters. • Simply tapping the tag with a stranger’s phone does not use up the one read. • Anyone who deliberately reads the tag with an NFC app makes the message unreadable, but cannot read it. MESSAGE SELF-DESTRUCT Messages in the dead drop can get an expiry time: one hour, one day, one week, 30 days or an exact moment. The time is encrypted inside the message; from the outside nobody can see when anything expires. Once it has passed, the app shows nothing and overwrites the sticker. Can be combined with “Readable once only”: the message is gone as soon as it has been read or has expired. HAND OVER KEYS BY LINK Besides QR code and AirDrop, a key can now be sent as a link. The link opens Cryptogramm on the other iPhone and asks for the one-time code there. Without that code the link is worthless – so send it separately, by a different route. KEY PASSPORT A folded A5 card for your own records. A key survives on it even when the phone does not: after an emergency wipe, after loss, after seizure. The passport is worth as much as the key itself and belongs in a safe, not in your wallet. EMERGENCY WIPE AS A SHORTCUT The emergency wipe is now available in the Shortcuts app. It runs in the background, without confirmation and without opening the app – for example on the Action button, with a double tap on the back of the phone, or in an automation when you leave a place. Siri and Spotlight deliberately do not suggest it. RUSSIAN Cryptogramm now speaks Russian – the ninth language alongside German, English, Spanish, French, Norwegian, Polish, Swedish and Ukrainian.
